The Fine Print

Some tubers are just ugly. They form themselves around other tubers and rocks, and perhaps even a stake in the ground. And they grow in dirt! Some tubers are tiny. But all it takes for a tuber to begin its journey into a magnificent bundle of blooms is a crown with a viable eye (a bump where a budding sprout emerges),  a body, where it holds all of its nutrients and water to develop the crown into a dahlia plant until roots grow and take over. And a neck (most the time- some tubers are just chunky and may not have a notable neck), which needs to be intact to carry the nutrients and stored water to the crown.  With that being said, Dahlia‘s can be finicky. Some varieties produce dozens of tubers, some varieties simply only grow a few. Some varieties grow tiny tubers, and some grow tubers that are 12 inches long. Some just consistently produce ugly, tiny tubers! Tubers require special care and growing conditions to become what you often see in growers’ portfolios!
